An image of one of their larger Speedaire air compressors follows. Image: Grainger’s range of Speedaire Air Compressors Under the Speedaire air compressor brand, Grainger currently offers portable air compressors in the range of.33 CFM up to about 10 CFM. Their stationary electric compressor line ranges up to about 100 CFM of air delivery at 90 PSI, with a range of tank and motor sizes. Grainger also supplies under the Speedaire brand a full line of replacement compressor pumps and a variety of gasoline powered portable and stationary compressors. Like many companies that sell air compressors any more, Grainger does not make their own air compressors. While not privy to the actual process, we expect that periodically Grainger reaches out to the compressor manufacturing community – and many of these firms are in the Orient (or have their compressor components manufactured there) – and gets them to bid on a job lot of XX-model of air compressor.

That means that your Speedaire Air Compressor model YYY that you purchased a few years ago, may not have the same manufacturer as the model YYY that’s available from Grainger today, even though it’s the same exact model number and overall appearance. Speedaire Air Compressors Parts & Maintenance Unlike many of the big box stores that sell various brands of air compressors, Grainger actually supports their brand. You must understand however that they have been selling Speedaire brand compressors for decades, and no company, regardless of how big they are, stocks parts and service information for products sold 10 – 15 or even 20 years before. Having said that, the first place to go for replacement parts and service information on Speedaire air compressors is Grainger themselves. We find their website, since it encompasses so many products, a bit hard to navigate, but do feel free to try. You’ll want to get a tank with a total gallon-age comparable to the existing one, simply because that compressor pump is designed to fill that tank without overloading the motor. You can use a larger tank too, but need to be sure that the fill time does not exceed the duty cycle of the compressor.
A smaller tank can be used, if doing so doesn’t cause the pump motor to cycle too often. That leads to unnecessary motor and pump wear. Having said that, you can use a tank from any source as long as the mounting plate can be modified to suit the mounting points of the existing pump and motor, with accessibility to the tank plumbing in mind. Google replacement air compressor tanks for ideas.
Sadly, the price of a new tank often exceeds the price of the original complete compressor, as the replacement tanks are typically manufactured here, with higher standards and materials than those that come in with cheap compressors from the orient. Add a photo here with the finished job is you would. Marge, given that this model of compressor is current, it shouldn’t be hard for Grainger to help. Contact them here:. You know the model number, but also check to see if there are any serial numbers on the motor information or pump tag if there is one. The more info you have when you call them, the more likely they will be able to help right away. Their help desk has been quite helpful to me over the years.
Call, email or chat on line at the address I show above. Could you add a comment telling us what you found to help other Speedaire users? I have a Speedaire sixty gal.upright air compressor with a 5 HP electric 230 Volt motor and want to replace the pump because it is making lots of noise and takes forever to fill! My parts manual shows Model 5Z185 but I’m sure this has been replaced with a newer model part number I’m very concerned because the salespeople of various places want to sell me a compressor pump that they say is the same as the one I have but only uses a three HP motor, wouldn’t you think that since I have a 5 HP elec. Motor that the pump should be matched accordingly rather than just selling a product? This is, I believe, a 1961 vintage air compressor, and as such, yup, parts will be hard to find.
I also think this is a twin cylinder, single stage compressor. The first thing, if you haven’t already done so, is call Grainger as Speedaire is their house brand. You have the model number, also get the serial number from the pump, and they will direct you to an appropriate replacement pump.
Or, visit the major compressor retailers in the area, look at their 5 HP compressors, find one that is similar to yours, get the pump number from the newer version, and see if you can find just the pump. This is a belt driven pump, so make sure any replacement pump has sheaves (motor and pump) that are same as or close to your own. That way, you can be sure that your 5 HP motor will run the new pump. The page I found about the Model 5Z185 said 1991, and I typed 1961 instead. Sorry about that. I did provide some advice in my original response, Don. If the original had a 5 HP motor, and the pump was rated for that 5 HP motor, then I cannot account for why Grainger, the distributor for Speedaire, would tell you a pump that was run by a 3 HP would do.
The proof will be in the the output. Check the specs online for the ouput from 5 HP driven pumps, and then for 3 HP pumps. That will tell the tale. Grainger still sells 5 HP pumps, so I do not know why they would refer you to a 3 HP driven pump, unless that’s the only size that fits the Model 5Z185 footprint? Even at that, as long as you can bolt the pump on, the sheaves line up, and you can get air from the pump head to the tank, the brand of pump may not even matter.
Sorry you’re having this much difficulty. Just got one pic as I didn’t realize the other was different. It would have been good to see the actual check valve. I’m not sure why finding a check valve is that hard? If it’s a simple non-return valve, any brand will work as long as you can install it, and it’s the same pipe size, so you don’t back pressure the pump. If it is one that goes into the tank, same same, any one that fits will work.
Failing that, by an in-line check valve, remove the one from the tank, and have the feed from the in-line valve go into the tank. Yup, you’ll need to mess with fittings, but it’s certainly doable. I hope someone can direct you to the actual part number too. I expect someone will, in time. Only that it sounds as though the compressor throttle unloader is not working properly. When tank pressure reaches cut out, the throttle unloader is supposed to reduce gas flow to the motor, slowing it to an idle. When the tank pressure drops far enough, that lower pressure is supposed to affect the throttle, open it up, so that the motor can speed up and pump more air via the compressor pump.
If the throttle unloader is not working, the symptoms would be similar to what you’ve written. See your compressor manual for info on the throttle unloader and how to adjust it. Assuming that “pawns” means PSI, I’ve not heard the term pawn as it relates to compressors, your compressor symptom suggests that you’ve had a gasket in the pump let go, or the valves may be failing. Try, with the tank empty of air, removing the line from the pump head to the tank. Start the compressor, and see if, wearing a work glove, you can block the air outflow from the pump with a finger. If so, that points to the pump as being the likely issue, and if so, that will mean a pump repair kit. Could you let us know what you found?
It seems that there are a lot of Speedaire compressors but not enough parts gauging from the number of panic-stricken owners. Is it really a problem with supply or suppliers? Apparently the problem lies in the older models of the compressor and the current source for Speedaire compressor parts may not always have the parts required.
It isn’t a problem unique to Speedaire compressors, it happens when there is a changing of the guards. The Speedaire Compressors An air compressor, like the Speedaire compressors, is very common around anything to do with the automotive industry. You need air for your vehicle tires, staple guns, and other power devices. It’s a handy machine to have around especially the portable compressors. However, they do have wear and tear and eventually they can falter or fail in spite of its rather simplistic engineering. The basic objective of an air compressor is to draw in air and spit it in controlled volumes. The Speedaire compressors have been around for quite some time and have been a household name for a good number of years.
It is now being managed by Grainger but there are many who still associate the Speedaire compressors with Dayton. Dayton is another product line under Grainger mainly to do with motors and pumps. Dayton Compressor Parts The main confusion for most new to air compressors is where to find parts and why there are Grainer Speedair parts and Dayton compressor parts for Speedaire. If the motor on your Speedair compressor is the problem, you could turn to the Dayton product line for a compatible motor. If it is any other compressor part, go to Grainger first. Either way, you can visit the Grainger website for more information on the Dayton compressor parts. Air Compressor Parts Before you start shopping for air compressor parts, you need to know the part that’s causing the problem.
Any DIY manual on how to operate and troubleshoot an air compressor can help you but you can also go back to the store you bought it from and ask for help. Usually they check the following:. Piston housing.
Motor. Starter. Pressure switch.
Unloader valve. Other valves. Compressor head The common air compressor parts that tend to wear down are the following: Safety Relief Valve – If you have to replace this, make sure you get the one that is ASME-certified. This is the part of the air compressor that releases air from the air compressor before it gets to a dangerous level. It always that air compressors are left on and since they’re not noisy machines, it could go unnoticed for some time.
The safety valve is an essential component because it pushes excess air out so the equipment does not get damaged. It’s like a warning sign for anyone close by that the air compressor has been left on and unattended.
The common cause for replacing this part is corrosion or clogging. You can check the ring around the valve for signs of these problems.
Pressure Regulator – This part of the air compressor reads, displays, and maintains the air pressure and works in conjunction with two other parts: the tank gauge and the oil level. The tank gauge measures the pressure found inside while oil level checks your oil. Manual Thermal Overload Control – This is self-explanatory and can be used to override the controls in case the air compressor starts to overheat. It’s a button that is easily accessed but once you activate it, you can’t turn on the air compressor until it has cooled down sufficiently. Other parts of the air compressor are the belt guard, hose rack, couplers and inflation kit. Why Replace Parts When You Can Just Buy A New Compressor?
If you have a Speedaire compressor and you are looking for parts, then it means that before it broke down, you were happy with its performance. Otherwise, you wouldn’t even bother spending more money on parts. Let this be your guiding principle when people ask you why you won’t just buy a new air compressor instead.
The fact is the Speedaire parts are not expensive which means you won’t be spending a lot to have the compressor repaired. If you can’t find the parts from the dealer you bought your equipment from, look on the internet or contact Grainger.

It is a dependable machine and worth maintaining. How To Find Spare Parts Grainger has their system all in place and their dealers are all well-versed with how to handle replacement parts. With the Speedaire compressors, all you have to do is find the nameplate. This nameplate should have the model number, stock number which is a 5 digit sequence and make. It would be great if you have a copy of your receipt and your Speedaire compressor manual.
If you can’t find the information on the machine, it will be in the manual or receipt. Most experts would suggest you keep a supply of some of the most commonly worn down parts. You don’t need a lot just one extra spare for each part. Since you are advised to maintain your air compressor regularly by, the spare parts will come in handy when you most need it.
It will save you time and possible money because the part may not be needed right away so you get it at a lower price. Grainger has always stressed that they keep a steady supply of Speedaire compressor parts for models that are as old as 10 years, maybe more. They know that these types of equipment last for decades so part of its service is making sure the spare parts are readily available. If you follow the direction on how to maintain the Speedaire compressor, it should last you 20 years or more provided you use it properly. This means cleaning and making sure it has oil.
